This is a view of Knaresborough from the west above the right bank of the River Nidd, with St John’s Church to the left, the High Bridge in the centre middle distance and the castle on the crag top to the right. On the same occasion Turner also sketched details of the castle and church from the same western aspect in the Yorkshire 1 sketchbook (Tate D11038; Turner Bequest CXLIV 104a).
