Cotter Force is about two miles north-west of the town of Hawes and a mile north-west of the village of Hardraw towards the head of Wensleydale. As the present writer has previously observed,1 Turner’s note of ‘Children looking over’ from the top of the rocks might suggest that the artist was as much the object of their attention as the waterfall; ‘We can almost hear them giggling and whispering about this peculiar stranger with a drawing pad who had invaded their secret dale’.
