To the left is a drawing of Kendal Castle from the south, continuing to the right the drawing of Kendal Bridge and Church on folio 44 verso (D11517) opposite. To the right are two details of Kendal Castle. The top drawing relates to the main sketch on this page, the lower drawing relates to the view of the castle as recorded two sketches previously, on folio 44 recto (D11516). This perhaps suggests that Turner was making use of a telescope to observe the details of his key buildings more clearly.
The inscription ‘4/6’ is presumably the original price of the sketchbook. Others inside the front cover (D41497) seem to indicate that it was progressively reduced to ‘4’ and ‘3’ shillings.
Technical notes:
There are traces at the right of a former clasp. The front cover has a catch-plate still present.
