The heads of these two seated dogs are studied here particularly closely. Like the adjacent drawing on folio 82 recto (D11677) this is probably related to the series of sketches of shoots on moorland near Farnley Hall, the seat of Turner’s Yorkshire friend and patron Walter Fawkes, at the end of the sketchbook (running from the back, folios 302 verso to 296 recto, D11908 to D11897).
