This is the top half of a double-page spread continued below on folio 64 (D10986), opposite, recording Knaresborough Castle and waterside of the River Nidd from the west, and continued right at the top of the page, to include the castle mills. A later spread from this sketchbook, folios 73 verso–74 (D11000–D11001), represents the subject also from the west but from a lower viewpoint and slightly further left. The sketchbook contains a number of other studies of Knaresborough, mostly views from the south, and scattered rather at random in the book, folios 49, 56 verso, 57 and 104 verso (D10957, D10972, D10973, D11038).
