This side of the page is now bound as the verso rather than the recto as described by Finberg. Turner’s view looks down the River Rhône to its junction with the River Arve, from the cliffs west of Geneva, near the Church of St Jean. It is taken from the same viewpoint as D41096 overleaf, effectively continuing the panorama to the right. The sketch notes figures on the bank in the foreground, one of these perhaps being H.A.J. Monro of Novar, Turner’s travelling companion on his 1836 tour, caught in the act of sketching.
The paper has darkened as a result of exposure.
