See Introduction to the sketchbook for the presence of a small run of sketches at Stratford-upon-Avon dating from 1833, including the main subject here, a view south along the river to Holy Trinity Church. The second thumbnail sketch, above, dating from 1836, depicts an Alpine castle on an eminence. This is perhaps Faucigny in the Arve Valley, in the light of Turner’s partly-legible inscription ‘Ch ....y’ to its right.
