Two diagrams of a chest (presumably front and back) are almost identical to the studies opposite on folio 40 verso (Tate D18588; Turner Bequest CCXI 40a). This item of furniture has been identified as a chest at Farnley Hall. See folio 6 (Tate D18533; Turner Bequest CCXI 6).
Between the two diagrams is a thumbnail landscape composition design labelled ‘Twickenham [?]P[ar]k | Brown Horn [cow] | Splashing the wat[er] | [?]Black [cow] on the Bank’. The design is in Turner’s typically Claudian mode with framing trees at the right, and a centrally positioned sun which is reflected in the water beneath. A ‘Boat’ with ‘Anglers’ is also noted. Sketches of boats on a river on folios 39 verso and 40 may be related (Tate D18586–D18587; Turner Bequest CCXI 39a–40).
