These sketches of a castle on a cliff were tentatively identified by Finberg as the château at Tancarville on the Seine,1 but Ian Warrell has since identified them as the château at Dieppe. At the top is a view from below the cliffs to the west with the inscription ‘sea’; a smaller sketch to the right details the outline of turrets along the top of the wall. For the sketch beneath, Turner climbed up the cliffs to the west to include the sea and the coastal cliffs to the north.2 There is another sketch of the château on folio 7 (Tate D24512; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 7).
