With the sketchbook turned to the left are four sketches running down the page, all made at Saint-Cloud on the Seine about six miles west of the centre of Paris. The top sketch depicts the two bridges at Saint-Cloud; (compare to folio 27 verso; Tate D24552; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 27a). Next is a view along the Seine towards Paris which can be made out in the distance. The third sketch depicts the banks of the Seine at Saint-Cloud with figures and ‘sheep’ on the bank, and boats in the water. Finally at the bottom of the page is another riverside scene with Paris in the distance.
For further sketches made at Saint-Cloud in the present sketchbook, see folio 3 verso (Tate D24505; Turner Bequest CCLVIII 3a).
Technical notes:
The page has yellowed apart from an unaffected border around the edge due to light exposure when the work was exhibited.
