Blind-stamped with the Turner Bequest monogram towards bottom right
Turner’s label for this drawing, also numbered ‘20’, reads ‘Unterseen Swiss [or Suisse]’, which must be the inscription recorded by Finberg. Figures are shown resting under trees. David Hill notes that the trees are the fruit trees familiar in the area of Unterseen, and used for the making of liqueurs.1 Turner made a drawing of the village square of Unterseen in this sketchbook (D04631; Turner Bequest LXXV 39).
