This sketch records the view looking along Otley Chevin from under Caley Crags. It is taken from a similar angle, but a lower viewpoint, to a sketch made c.1818 in the Farnley sketchbook (Tate D12009–D12010; Turner Bequest CLIII 9a–10). The figures suggest the theme of the finished watercolour of Woodcock Shooting on the Chevin (Wallace Collection, London)1 based on the previous sketch in the present sketchbook, folio 47 recto (D09123), although the poses are completely reworked in the watercolour. The pose of the principal figure is studied more closely in the following sketch, folio 49 recto (D09125). The principal figure in the watercolour of Woodcock Shooting was identified as ‘Sir Henry’ (evidently a mistake for Sir William) Pilkington in the catalogue of Christie’s sale, 30 April 1863, lot 271.2 Sir William, of Chevet Hall, Wakefield, commissioned the watercolour.

2
‘Sir H. Pilkington’ is also given by Andrew Wilton, ibid.
