This sketch is taken from a viewpoint somewhat to the south of Black Rocks and is the most distant of a number of sketches of this aspect made on the same visit, including one in the Scarborough 1 sketchbook (Tate D11924; Turner Bequest CL 8) and another in the present sketchbook (D11971; Turner Bequest CLI 17a). Together these formed the basis of a finished watercolour of Scarborough (private collection)1 dated 1818.
The leaf was removed from the sketchbook at some time, and later restored.
