Lydford’s church and castle are seen directly aligned from the south-west across the deep, wooded Lydford gorge. For other views around Lydford, see under folio 28 recto (D09510), which shows the view in the opposite direction. Perhaps made on the same occasion, a single, slightly more finished study in the Devonshire Rivers, No. 3, and Wharfedale sketchbook (Tate D09840; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 45) shows the tower and keep from a little further east, with the tower clear to the left of the castle and the hills beyond consequently further to the right.
