Taddiport Bridge is in the foreground, with Great Torrington Common rising to the east on the north bank of the River Torridge. On the skyline is the tower seen in other drawings here, which appears to be the gazebo or belvedere still standing beside the bowling green on the site of the medieval castle off Castle Street.1 There is a similar view on folio 88 recto (D09575), and others in the contemporary Devonshire Rivers, No. 3, and Wharfedale sketchbook (Tate D09809, D09810, and possibly D09829; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 18, 18a, 36).
For other views of the town on adjacent pages, see under folio 80 recto (D09566).
