Turner’s viewpoint is the north end of Abbey Bridge, Tavistock. The buildings in the immediate foreground do not survive, but the pinnacled building in the centre, a remnant of Tavistock Abbey, was later incorporated into the Guildhall and Magistrate’s Court still standing between Abbey Place and Market Road. In the distance to the north-west is the tower of St Eustachius’s Church.
For other views of Tavistock on adjacent pages, see under folio 143 verso (D09661).
Technical notes:
The leaf is rubbed and stained halfway down the right-hand edge, and a significant loss has been made good. This appears to have been caused by proximity to the brass clasp formerly set into the back cover.
