Turner has bisected the page both horizontally and vertically, using the quadrants to show related views of the steep valley of the Dart Estuary. On the left are two sketches of Dartmouth Castle from the east, looking across the Dart with Kingswear Castle on the near side. There is a full-page view from a similar angle on folio 57 recto (D09740).
At the bottom right is a drawing of Dartmouth Castle from further north on the wooded bank opposite, as Turner notes; at the top right is a view of the coast, looking south-west across Start Bay to Start Point, some ten miles away. A full-page study of the coast is on folio 56 recto opposite (D09739).
This is one of a sequence of views around Dartmouth and the Dart Estuary between folios 50 recto and 60 recto (D09730, D09744); for sketches made in 1811, see under the first of these.
