The bridge over the River Dart is seen upstream to the north-west, with the spire of Holy Trinity Church, Buckfastleigh on the hill to the west. In the foreground is the smaller bridge over the River Ashburn at the point where it flows into the Dart; the viewpoint is now immediately to the west of the dual carriageway which crosses the Dart on a new bridge, and only the very top of the spire can be seen above trees.
Turner has made a verbal rather than a visual note of building activity on the vicinity. There is a sketch from nearby on folio 27 recto (D09846; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 50), where the bridge seen here in the foreground appears on the right; and one from the other side of the main bridge on folio 22 recto (D09844; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 48), under which further views around Buckfastleigh and Buckfast Abbey are discussed.
