This sketch of the Dovestone outcrop, looking west up Hall Beck Gill near Blubberhouses, is similar to those on folios 34 recto and 36 recto (D09798, D09799; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 9, 10), and the subject is discussed under the latter.
In his entry in the present catalogue for Tate D40047, the verso of another Dovestone drawing (Tate D12099; Turner Bequest CLIV A), David Hill has linked the present sketch with one of three watercolour Yorkshire ‘colour beginnings’ on a single sheet (Tate D25492; Turner Bequest CCXLIII 369).1 The other two can be related to his 1816 tour of Yorkshire gathering material for Dr Whitaker’s Richmondshire (see the overall Introduction to the present tour), suggesting that Turner perhaps contemplated a finished version of Hall Beck Gill.
For other views at and around Farnley Hall and nearby Yorkshire properties belonging to Walter Fawkes see under folio 1 verso (D09790).
