Finberg’s vague title reflects the slightness of some of the foreground forms in this sketch, which are resistant to interpretation. There is a man standing towards the right, next to what appears to be a farm cart seen end on. The slightly irregular structures towards the left may be bridges, weirs or fences. The curve above them in the middle distance is probably a river, or perhaps a road, below a gently sloping skyline.
Most of the views in this sketchbook are identifiable as Devon subjects of 1814 or Yorkshire ones of 1816, but the lack of landmarks makes this drawing difficult to place. It falls between sketches made in both counties both in Finberg’s paginated sequence (see the Concordance in the sketchbook’s Introduction) and in its present position in the sketchbook. The drawing is upside down in terms of the sketchbook’s current foliation.
