This is a rough overall compositional study for the painting Apullia in Search of Appullus (Tate N00495), exhibited at the British Institution in 1814;1 for more details and related studies on adjacent pages, see under folio 63 verso (D09976).2 The present drawing continues a little way onto folio 67 recto opposite (D09983). There is a similar, heavily shaded variant on folios 67 verso–68 recto (D09984, D09985).
