On the left is the North Gate of Dudley Castle, with the outline of the keep at the southern end of the inner courtyard beyond, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation. The gateway is now largely obscured by trees across a pool in Dudley Zoo, which surrounds the castle ruins.
There is a view of the keep in the same direction from inside the courtyard on folio 68 verso opposite (D22104; Turner Bequest CCXXXVIII 66a). For other views of Dudley see under folio 23 recto (D22016).
