The view along the top, inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, is a continuation of the main view on folio 43 verso opposite (D22231), where the main block of Chatsworth House is shown from the north-west. Here the low wing running north from the house is seen, terminating in the turreted belvedere, above the stepped wall of the raised gardens, with the tower of the stable block in the distance to the east. Towards the outer edge, with the page turned vertically, Turner has drawn the stables and belvedere from closer up, with the arches and lodges of the entrance screen on this side of the tall belvedere. Turner has noted the columns flanking the central arch as ‘Doric’. Below the main view is the western elevation of the stable block, and to its right a detail of the central and right-hand arches of the entrance screen, marked ‘4’ above the main arch, apparently to indicate the four triglyphs in the Doric frieze.
For other views of Chatsworth, see under D22231.
