Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the main subject appears to be a rough study of foreground trees with a hill or coastal headland beyond. At the top left is a slight continuation from one of the landscape sketches on folio 47 recto opposite (D28855). This is one of various watercolour and pencil landscape studies towards the end of this sketchbook, as set out in the Introduction.
The unaccessioned recto is inscribed in red ink ‘46’ and stamped ‘CCXCI(b) – 46’, and is blank save for very slight offsetting of ink from folio 45 verso opposite (D28852).
