Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 50 Verso:
?A Landscape c.1834–6
D28861
Turner Bequest CCXCI b 50
Watercolour on white wove paper, 77 x 101 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Roughly half the page has been rapidly worked with grey wash, leaving the other half untouched. The forms might suggest trees, clouds or waves, but there is too little development to be more than speculative. If it is a landscape, it is one of various watercolour and pencil studies of such subjects towards the end of this sketchbook, as set out in the Introduction.
The unaccessioned recto is inscribed in red ink ‘50’ and stamped ‘CCXCI(b) – 50’, and is blank save for a very slight continuation of watercolour at the gutter from folio 49 verso (D28860).
