In this roughly wrought sketch Turner has depicted part of the ruined walls of the medieval Franchimont Castle. With swift, energetic line the artist has suggested the dilapidation of the monument: the crumbling and collapsing masonry lending the ruin its jagged profile. Turner has inscribed ‘Franchimont’ at the bottom right of the folio.
