Rendered in swift and loose line, this sketch Turner depicts Mézières from a north-easterly angle: a view which incorporates the imposing Gothic Basilica of Notre-Dame d’Espérance and the Tour d’Ecole and Tour Militaire in the foreground. The curving meander of the Meuse can be seen in the distance. This drawing, and other sketches of Mézières (see Tate D28191, D28193, D28195, D28199, D28201, D28204; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19a), constitute preparatory studies for a gouache and watercolour executed on blue paper in 1839 (Tate D24731; Turner Bequest CCLIX 166).
