This sketch depicts Bernkastel and the Burg Landshut atop a mount. Turner’s viewpoint was from the riverside at Kues looking downstream on the Meuse. The Gothic Church of St Michael with its celebrated turreted spire is at centre left. The view is similar to Tate D28407; Turner Bequest CCXC 29, with both featuring scenes of local life in the foreground: figures sailing or attending to their boats, vessels moored at the shoreline. Both sketches also formed the basis of a gouache, pen and ink and watercolour drawing of c.1839 (private collection).1
There is a tiny drawing of what is believed to be the hospital at Kues at bottom right, sketched inversely to the principal scene.
