This slight and summary sketch shows the city of Wiesbaden take from a high viewpoint at the ruins of the medieval Sonnenburg Castle (see Tate D28478–D28482; Turner Bequest CCXC 64a–66a). The cupolas and towers of the city are roughly jotted in at the top.
Wiesbaden was a popular spa resort at the time of Turner’s visit, home to an array of thermal springs where visitors from all over Europe flocked to take the medicinal waters (see Tate D28476; Turner Bequest CCXC 63 a).
