With its ‘three lofty belfries... high gables and lengthened roofs in the Romanesque style’, the profile of the Church of St Castor is depicted here, rendered in tentative line behind the Burghaus at Karden’s waterfront. Quin describes the Burghaus’ turreted and ‘castellated’ architecture, with its multiple ‘projecting towers’, as: ‘probably intended to be the palace of some “baron bold”, though never completed for that purpose’.1 Both landmarks are found on folio 10 verso of this sketchbook (Tate D28556; Turner Bequest CCXCI 10a) and in a gouache drawing on blue paper (Tate D24709; Turner Bequest CCLIX 144).
