This panoramic prospect, which continues across folio 18 recto opposite (D18737), is to the south-east from the vicinity of the Upperton Monument folly in Petworth Park. In the distance on the right here is Petworth House, about a mile and a half away, while the tower of All Hallows, Tillington appears on the other page.1 There is a condensed version of the overall view on folio 18 verso (D18738).
The sequence of sketches between here and (apparently) folio 26 recto (D18753), and possibly 26 verso (D18754), comprises Sussex subjects in the vicinity of Petworth, those as far as folio 22 verso (D18746) showing the park west of the house. For a note on Lord Egremont, Petworth, and Turner’s work there, see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
