With the page turned vertically, Turner has made three studies of Charles James Fox’s villa at St Anne’s Hill, near Chertsey in Surrey. The house does not survive, but compare the drawings on folios 26 recto and 27 recto (D20589, D20591); the slight middle drawing here seems to show the veranda and projecting bay seen in those views from the opposite direction. For more on Fox, St Anne’s Hill and Samuel Rogers, who commissioned illustrations of the house and garden for his Poems, see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
