Inverted in relation to the sketchbook as foliated, the small studies of riverside hills that fill this page were taken at Duclair on the banks of the Seine. Though the drawings are generic in effect, Turner’s notes towards the bottom of the page locate them to the environs of that small ferry town on the right bank of the river. For the watercolours of Duclair that Turner worked up with a view to engraved reproduction around this time, see Tate D24671 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 106), D24739 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 174), and D24774 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 209). These culminated in an engraving in the 1834 volume of Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France); see Tate impression T05603.
A list of pages in the sketchbook featuring views of Duclair is provided in the entry for folio 68 recto (D24015; Turner Bequest CCLIV 68).
