Rendered with free line, this sketch depicts a windmill overlooking a river. A boat with an expansive sail is pictured at right with a swift economy of line, while a small dinghy is recorded in the foreground with a single figure standing within it who appears to look back towards land. Loose hatching and fluid scalloped line is used to describe mushrooming clouds and rainfall at left. A similar view is shown on Tate D19892; Turner Bequest CCXVI 171.
