This slight and swiftly rendered sketch shows traditional crow-stepped gabled houses at ‘Brux’, presumably Turner’s shortening of Bruxelles or Brussels. The artist stayed at the Belgian city on 12 August 1824, at the very beginning of his tour. See also Tate D20068–D20072; Turner Bequest CCXVI 264–266.
