This is a view of the Belgian city of Brussels, taken from a northerly perspective. Turner may have drawn this view from the vast parkland which surrounds the Royal Palace of Laeken, situated to the north of the city. The profile of the Town Hall, constructed in the fourteen hundreds in the Brabantine Gothic style, can be seen at right. Turner stayed at Brussels on 12 August 1824, at the very beginning of his tour, and on 5 September, towards the end of it.
