With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a view down a wide Parisian boulevard. Particular attention has been paid to the recession of the tree-lined thoroughfare in perspective. Turner made several sketches of Parisian streets in the present volume, a list of which is provided in the sketchbook Introduction. These studies culminated in an engraving of a lively street scene in the 1835 volume of Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France); see Tate T04723.
