With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the central strip of this page with a view of a small town. The handling is too cursory here to suggest a definitive location for this subject although the tower to the right of the scene appears similar to that of the Church of Notre-Dame at Romilly-sur-Seine, some seventy miles east of Paris. A second sketch of a town in a landscape is featured running down the left-hand edge of the page.
