With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled much of this page a landscape of wide flights of stairs and pedestals typical of a formal garden. The recurrence of sketches on adjacent pages of the gardens of Château de Saint-Cloud, some seven miles west of central Paris suggest that this drawing was taken at the same location. For a comparison, see Turner’s illustration of Saint-Cloud’s gardens for a new edition of Walter Scott’s Life of Napoleon Buonaparte (1834–36);1 see Tate impression T04974.
