With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with drawings of classical architectural structures and framing trees typical of a formal garden. The recurrence of sketches on adjacent pages depicting the gardens of Château de Saint-Cloud, some seven miles west of central Paris, suggest that this drawing was taken at the same location. For a comparison, see Turner’s illustration of Saint-Cloud’s gardens for a new edition of Walter Scott’s Life of Napoleon Buonaparte (1834–36); see Tate impression T04974.
