With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a drawing of a riverside landscape with a bridge viewed through the narrow trunks of saplings. Turner’s inscription ‘St Cloud’ on a closely comparable scene on folio 142 verso opposite (D24446; Turner Bequest CCLVII 142a) suggests that this sketch was also taken at Saint-Cloud, some seven miles west of central Paris on the banks of the Seine.
