With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the centre of this page with a study of figures gathered in an interior. Turner travelled extensively around Paris and its surrounding countryside with this sketchbook and also up the River Marne to the east of the city, so this scene was probably captured in one of those locations. The left-hand side of the page had a large section torn out of it when Turner used it which has subsequently been repaired. As a result, the area just to the right of the repair bears a small part of a drawing of a carriage on folio 168 verso (D24497; Turner Bequest CCLVII 168a). A semi-legible note on the right-hand side of the drawing records a French address.
Technical notes:
A large section of the left-hand part of the page has been torn out and repaired.
