Here Turner depicts aspects of the port of Yarmouth on the Norfolk coast. Drawing from various vantage points the artist records buildings and houses overlooking the sands, the town and coastline beyond. The monument erected in memory of Admiral Horatio Nelson can be seen at far right in the central view. This sketch was preparatory material for the watercolour design of Yarmouth engraved in 1829 for the England and Wales series (see Tate impression T04547).1
For other sketches of Yarmouth in this book see Tate D18203–D18223; Turner Bequest CCIX 24a–34a.
