Drawing from a lofty vantage point in the hills, here Turner has rendered a prospect of Arundel Park and Castle in West Sussex (see Tate D18418; Turner Bequest CCX 63). Turner has taken the sketch from behind the Castle, a viewpoint which afforded him the fullest extent of the Arun valley and the English Channel in the distance (see Tate D18430–D18431; Turner Bequest CCX 69–69a).
There are two thumbnail sketches of Arundel Park rendered at top right and top left, the latter produced with the book turned upright in accordance with the foliation. The jottings are inscribed ‘WDC’ and ‘High Hals [...]’. The drawings are associated with Turner’s watercolour designs for W.B. Cooke’s Rivers of England, in particular Arundel Castle on the River Arun (Tate D18140; Turner Bequest CCVIII G). 1
