This is a detailed study of Arundel Castle in West Sussex, the ancient seat of the Dukes of Norfolk. The Castle’s Banqueting Hall is rendered at rear and continues onto the folio opposite (Tate D18437; Turner Bequest CCX 72a). Arundel’s Banqueting Hall is decorated with a twenty-foot stained glass window depicting the meeting of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. Designed by the artist William Hamilton, the window was produced by the artisan glass-painter Francis Eginton.1
These sketches are associated with Turner’s watercolour designs for W.B. Cooke’s Rivers of England print series: Arundel Castle on the River Arun, with a Rainbow (Tate D18139; Turner Bequest CCVIII F) and Arundel Castle on the River Arun (Tate D18140; Turner Bequest CCVIII G). 2
