The mountainous subject is unidentified, but is probably Italian; see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. The same distinctive profile of the peaks beyond the hill town appears further off in Tate D33786 and D33792 (Turner Bequest CCCXLI 105, 111). Turner’s inscriptions presumably indicate place names but have yet to be clearly deciphered.
