Little can be made of Turner’s working notes, inscribed with the page turned and amended at least once, with the first word, possibly ‘Paris’, crossed out and another beginning with ‘B’ added below. They may relate to potential travel arrangements during Turner’s autumn 1845 tour of France, although in the event his itinerary was restricted to Normandy and adjacent parts of Picardy, as discussed in the overall Introduction to this tour.
Technical notes:
There is some brown staining at the gutter, possibly indicating water damage in the 1928 Tate flood.
