Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 54 Recto:
?Le Hourdel Lighthouse 1845
D35581
Turner Bequest CCCLXI 54
Pencil on white wove paper, 111 x 86 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘54’ top right, ascending vertically
Stamped in black ‘CCCLXI – 54’ top right, ascending vertically

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
With the page turned vertically, there are three studies apparently showing the same lighthouse. The details suggest the one at Le Hourdel, Picardy, on the west side of the Somme Estuary where it meets the Channel north-east of Le Tréport (see folio 55 recto; D35583). Compare folio 61 verso (D35595), and see the sketchbook’s Introduction for other identified subjects along this coast.
Technical notes:
There is some brown staining at the gutter, possibly indicating water damage in the 1928 Tate flood.
