This view of the west front of Orléans Cathedralis one of several colour studies Turner made of the city after his 1826 tour of Northern France. It is based on pencil studies in the Loire, Tours, Orleans and Paris sketchbook from that year; see entry for Tate D23310, D23311 (Turner Bequest CCXLIX 33, 33a).
