The view is west from the Bacino across the start of the Giudecca Canal, with the Dogana at the centre and the entrance to the Grand Canal to the right. Loosely indicated beyond the Dogana are the domes of the church of Santa Maria della Salute. The view continues south-west across to the Giudecca and its churches on folio 15 verso opposite (D14516). The Turner scholar C.F. Bell annotated Finberg’s 1909 Inventory entry (‘Dogana and S. Maria della Salute’): ‘from off the point’.1 Bell marked Finberg’s similar text in In Venice with Turner (1930): ‘from a boat off the point’.2
The subject relates closely to the more detailed rendering in the contemporary Milan to Venice sketchbook (Tate D14338–D14339; Turner Bequest CLXXV 64a–65). For other drawings made in the vicinity, see the sketchbook’s Introduction.
